Phone setting problems

I bought a Samsung GT-C3300k mobile from Virgin today and need some help please. Firstly, how do you switch off the sound on startup, and stop the clicks when you enter numbers etc, and secondly, I went through the settings for ntlworld email, and although the confirmation screen came up, I can't send or receive emails. Are the default ports on the phone correct, and if someone could give me the settings, I would be grateful, as I'm not that techie minded and the instruction book is of little help. Thank you
