And im just wondering if the box will still be usable for the freeview channels or will the whole box be deactivated?

You can use it to receive FTA satellite channels however the recordable side Sky+ software doesn't work unless you pay £10 a month.

I believe you also need to keep your sky viewing card.

His current card will be fine however he would have to replace it when Sky next issue viewing cards at a cost of around £20.00 I believe.
