UKTV to launch 3 more HD channels and VOD on skyHD.

From UKTV Support.

Morning all,

UKTV is pleased to announce that we will be launching HD versions of Watch, Dave and Alibi in the very near future. You will be able to see Watch HD and Dave HD on Sky from later this year with Alibi HD joining them in 2012.

Additionally, we are also announcing today the launch of a UKTV Video on Demand service on Sky Anytime+. From September, Sky subscribers with a Sky Anytime+ enabled box will be able to download hundreds of hours of programmes from Watch, GOLD, Dave, Alibi, Good Food, Home and Eden. Titles will include: Fawlty Towers, Doctor Who, New Tricks, Murdoch Mysteries, Argumental, Top Gear, Planet Earth, The Long Way Round, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Rick Stein’s French Odyssey, Rachel Allen: Bake! and many more. The service will include the best BBC programming together with UKTV's own programming and acquisitions.

Official press release.

We live in hope, although it wont be from UKTV for the forseeable. I just fired an email off asking if the new hd channels were going to be available to vm subscribers or Sky only and here is the short, sweet reply I got.........

Sky only. Thanks
.
Bit of a let down considering VM own a large stake in these channels iirc.

Yes this is one deal l find a bit staggering as Virgin have a 50% stake and yet we will have 5 UKTV HD channels on Sky and VOD going on Sky as well.

How many times have l said, VM directors don't give a damn about its customers, otherwise we would have all the channels out there, Sky put the customers as a priority, VM don't.

So. UKTV are going to launch HD versions of channels where the bulk of the content they show is only available in SD. Beyond Sky pulling their usual trick of adding the letters HD to a channel name, then showing mainly SD content, how is this a good thing?

Care to list which channels your talking about ? Most of the Sky Channels show the bulk of their daily schedules in HD in fact the only channel I can think of that has limited HD content is Channel 5.

Re: UKTV to launch 3 more HD channels and VOD on skyHD.

E4 (due to the fact its 23/7 Friends), Comedy Central and ITV1 aren't too good for HD (better than C5 though) but apart from those most channels seem to have most their stuff in HD.

I think after 7pm ITV have improved vastly , just checked now and ITV 1,2,3,4 HD are all showing shows in HD , but I take your point about E4.

True HD, or just SD that is upscaled at the transmission end so the box picks it up as HD?

Actually, in fairness to Sky, a lot of their new stuff is true HD. The trouble is, a lot of the repeats they show aren't.
