Updating the Netgear adapter!
When I try to update the driver for my 'FA311 Fast Ethernet Adapter' I get this message:

Cannot continue the hardware update wizard.
THe wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed.

Does that mean I have to buy a different adapter or I can I download it from somewhere to update it?

Yes it is working.

For example on World of Warcraft on the downloader it says that there is an incompatible network driver which is the FA311.

Well you COULD try downloading the latest one for you device from the NETGEAR site and installing that. But it really shouldn't make a difference to the Bliz Downloader

As with many Netgear products, you need to know the version you've got before downloading the driver...

FA311 here but you need to know if you've got v1 or v2...

Should be obvious from the piccys!
