NAT issues

After some help. This is a compliated one!

I have a zoom x3 adsl modem/router which has one ethernet out port.

This I have connected to the WAN port of my d-link di-624+ wireless router.

The zoom is on the IP range 10.0.0.XX and the d-link on the range 10.0.1.XX. (having the different ranges is the only way that I could get them to work together and give me connectivity)

Everything connected to the network does so on the d-link range.

So the problem I have is that, no matter what I do, I can't get ports to be fully open for bittorrent etc. I've even set up DMZs on both the zoom and the d-link (I know it's not a good idea, but I wanted to see if anything would work!) but to no avail.

The ports I open on the d-link and the DMZ I set up always point to my computer on the network and I've tried to open up the ports on the zoom to both the computer and also the d-link, but neither scenario works

(so, for example, zoom [ip 10.0.0.1] has port 6881 [both udp & tcp] or dmz open to d-link router [ip 10.0.1.1]. d-link has port 6881 [both udp & tcp] open to pc [ip 10.0.1.100] - doesn't work.

scenario 2 - zoom has port 6881 [tcp & udp] or dmz opened directly to the computer [ip 10.0.1.100] as does the d-link - doesn't work.)

I have a basic understanding of NAT routing and in the past, this hasn't really been an issue where I've just had a cable modem and attache to the router, but I think it's the combo of the zoom and the d-link that is causing an issue, but there must be a way around it?

Both Shields Up and Azureus show an issue with the ports. It's driving me crazy!

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Can you not set the D-link up to act as an access point instead of a router, would make things a lot less complicated.

Also if you wire one pc straight to the zoom, then do you get the port forwarding working properly?

Don't have the issues when the zoom is connected to the PC directly, no, but I don't see any way to change the d-link into an access point only.

Any ideas? Really don't fancy buying a standalone access point (also, that would mean I couldn't connect my wired devices?)

Sounds quite complex to me.

Does the Zoom have a firewall on it. If so, turn it off, or put the IP of the D-link into the DMZ. Two firewalls plus anything running on a PC is probably a tad overkill.

Do you know that the gateways and similar paths are setup OK? i.e. the PC's look to the d-link for their IPs in range 10.0.1.xx, while the d-link's WAN port, connected to the zoom, picks up the zoom's IP range of 10.0.0.xx? Are the PCs all set to auto for their IP's and internet address settings or is anything on fixed stuff?

Sorry for the delay in replying.

Already set the DMZ on the zoom to the d-link address, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

Also, the PC has a fixed address that I've assigned (on the d-link's 10.0.1.XX range). D-link is using the zoom 10.0.0.XX as its internet gateway.

This should work in theory...

ADSL router has ports you need pointing through to IP of other router.
On the Other router, port forward the ports needed to your PC.

What happens in effect is thus:

Connection comes in on port 6000 - hit the ADSL router, the router then forwards all the packets onto the IP specifed (in this case your other router), the other router gets data for that port, looks up what to do with it, forwards it on to your PC...

Can I just ask why you have 2 routers though? If the data is going to get through one, then it has a good chance to get through the other. Would it not be easier to just replace the 2nd router with a Switch and job is done?

(edit - Just thought, Maybe your 1st router has no Wireless and second one has - this would explain a lot)...

Edit2: To cut out the router and make it a Acces point, connect the ADSL router to the LAN port not the Wan port - then its becomes a Switch if you like. The Wireless part should still get an IP from the ADSL router (i think lol)..
