I have a belkin router attached to my cable modem. Does this effect the speed or any updates that are sent to my router ???

Re: does a router effect downloading speed?

By a tiny percentage, not exactly a noticeable speed decrease, unless of course the router is on its way out... Then anything could happen.

Why are you asking? Looking to use one? experiencing a problem with one ?

yes it might effect ur speed, because the routers have inbuild firewalls...

check ur speeds connecting MODEM and PC directly

Re: does a router effect downloading speed?

I thought my Router/Firewall may be causing some of the problem, but i got the same results when i connected direct to the modem.

Pc is connected to the router by eternet cable.

Recently upgraded to 2 mb, all speed tests are still showing 1 mb

Mon, 1 May 2006 21:00:01 UTC

1st 512K took 4172 ms = 122.7 KB/sec, approx 1011 Kbps, 0.99 Mbps
2nd 512K took 4344 ms = 117.9 KB/sec, approx 971 Kbps, 0.95 Mbps
3rd 512K took 4328 ms = 118.3 KB/sec, approx 975 Kbps, 0.95 Mbps
4th 512K took 4328 ms = 118.3 KB/sec, approx 975 Kbps, 0.95 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 983 Kbps, 0.96 Mbps

Was on phone for 40 minutes today to technical team to try and sort out. They said that it should work and i should leave for about 5 hours. Did this, still the same as you can see from above.

I have another thread on the site stating just to keep pestering but it is not getting me anywhere. Apart from a large phone bill from ringing the 0871 number

depends, what i suggest you do is take the router out of the equation and try a direct connection to the ethernet port on your pc, and post back the speed test results.

Re: does a router effect downloading speed?

Cannot upgrade online, tells me to ring customer services, Which i think i will be doing again today.

Modem config still shows 1 mb, even though customer services are telling me on here system it is saying i am set up for 2 mb
