Re: best router?

Hi,

I would suggest reading the article at the top of this networking forum - 'Router Recommendations'! (Linksys WRT54G or GS is what a lot around here use)

Re: best router?

Using a Linksys WRK54G here, no problems from the router yet, apart from the odd dropout every now and again.

It's my wireless card that's given me hassle.

List of compatible devices here: http://wrt-wiki.bsr-clan.de/index.ph...ported_Devices

Sadly, mine's a WRT54GS v5, which runs on a different operating system. It seems to be being worked on, though, one way or another - hopefully one day soon there'll be a version that'll work with it.

Sweex? no problems with my LB000021 = Edimak BR-6104k here.. - though these are wired, not wireless.

Unlike:

Gigabyte GN-BR401 - 2 friends had them, both failed outside warranty.
Benq ESG-103 - notoriously incompatible with PACE STB (a friend has one, works fine with with SACM or Samsung)
The cheapest Ebuyer (Safecom) model also had a pretty bad reputation for killing connection speed.

Only wireless one I've seen in use so far, is a friend's USR8022 - sorted that one out for them specially, as they really needed a wireless link but had thoughts of going back to dialup (before the price gap between broadband and non-payg dialup of any quality collapsed) - miserable range, struggles to maintain a connection upstairs (though I gather that can be a weakness of WiFi - goes more out than up).

Lovely stuff, particularly wanting the transmit power option.

Shame there doesn't seem to be a version that could run on a WRK54G

I have the WRT54GS.. version 5. Unlike versions 1-4, it runs VXWorks, not a Linux based operating system. Linksys were forced to reveal the source for v1-4 a few years ago under GPL licensing terms - with VXWorks, it's totally different. Not aided by the fact that v5 is lower spec than the other routers.
