Ah, not good. But i suspect its only a metter of time until we see modified ones People get bored, people have ideas... hopefully someone will get bored with there V5 soon. hehe.

Re: best router?
DD-WRT mini can run on a V5 - the only alternate firmware that can.
A friend managed to pick up a V4 not so long ago - a little smaller than the previous ones, but still a Linux model to start with.

Re: best router?
Surely it's not possible without making hardware modifications, even with the mini version?

Impossible due to the OS on the router itself. dd-wrt is based on Linux, the V5 is based on VXworks.

True, but it can be done - see the hardware link above. Although, it obviously involves changing the whole OS.

I've only ever seen v5s in PC Worlds and a Dixons earlier. There's a list of serial numbers that are v1-4 and v5 on the DD-WRT website.. I'd be very surprised if PC World have any 1-4s.

Re: best router?
So I take it that if you buy a WRT54GL-UK now, it'll be V5 - and that there are issues with this? Anything that'd affect everyday use?
Anyone any experience with Buffalo Airstation products, particularly the high power (WHR-HP-G54)?

Re: best router?
As far as I know, yes, it'll probably be V5. You can check as each box is marked with the serial code - if you look on the DD-WRT site, it'll tell you which serial codes = which version. There's no issue for everyday use, V5 works fine for that - it's just for those of us who want it bit more that it doesn't.

Re: best router?
Cheers geezer, wondered if that was the case!
Stupid question time, perhaps - does the 54GS (speedbooster version) work happily with normal 11g equipment - I know they say it will, but saying and doing isn't necessarily the same thing, IME!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it will.
