Unhappy broadband will not work with netget wireless router

Hi,
I have an imac computer and recently had ntl phone tv and braodban installed. I hvae two netgear routers, one is an adls one with built in odem which worked fine with my BT broadband, the other is a netgear router with no modem but has ethernet connection. I spen all of last weekent trying to get my ethernet router (without modem) connected but my imac is not recognising it. When I called NTL for support they told me thay do not have technicians to support wireless queries. I do not know where to go for assisstance! Is there any way to get either of these two routers working on my imac with ntl or do I have to switch back to BT?

Any help or advice would be greatly appeciated.

Re: broadband will not work with netget wireless router

tp the forum.

I'm confused. Does the iMac work connected directly to your Set Top Box or Cable Modem?

Re: wireless router will not work with ntl broadband???

A bit more detail might help -
Are you connecting through the Set top box (STB) or a separate Cable Modem?
What's the model number of the router without modem?
Are you trying to connect the iMac to the router via ethernet or wirelessly? Generally, you need to connect to the router via ethernet to configure it before switching to wireless.

Re: wireless router will not work with ntl broadband???

If your iMac is plugged into the same box as the Television set, then it is plugged into the Set Top Box.

If it's plugged into a box with two other cables (one going to a mains socket, and the other going to the Cable socket on the wall), that is a Cable Mode.

Re: wireless router will not work with ntl broadband???

The Netgear WPN802 is a Wireless Access Point, not a router. That means it is used to add wireless capability to an existing network. This will not allow you to share the NTL BB connection.
Your ADSL Router/Modem will also not work with NTL BB.

I'm afraid you are looking at a new (or ebayed) 'Cable Router' with or without wireless.

Sorry if thats not what you want to hear!

Re: wireless router will not work with ntl broadband???

Stage 1 here. You say you have only recently had ntl broadband installed. I suspect you are still posting htis using your DSL conection?

Can you confirm that you do actually have an internet connection via the Set Top Box (STB), or Cable Modem? Simply put, if you switch off the power to the modem / STB, unplu all ethernet (networking) cables from it to any computer or router, plug a single ethernet cable in between the Modem / STB and a computer, now power on the STB / router and then the connected computer, what happens?

Remember that every time you swap cabels around that plug in to computers / routers that the other end is plugged into the Modem / STB, the modem / STB must be powered off and then on again. It won't detect the change made otherwise?

edit: Aragorn spotted the big problem - no cable compatible router

Re: wireless router will not work with ntl broadband???

Can you say whether you have ever successfully had the iMac working with NTL, or has it never worked?

I have an iMac that has worked happily with NTL via ethernet for years, so hopefully I will be able to help once you have given us the full details.

Re: wireless router will not work with ntl broadband???

Thanks for all the info,
I previously had BT broadband with adsl connection and this worked fine with my imac and the netgear DG834GT however this does not work with the NTL bradband so i tried the WPN802 and now this does not work either. Is ther such a thing as a adsl to ethernet converter and if I get one would my netgear DG834GTthen work?

---------- Post added at 15:30 ---------- Previous post was at 15:29 ----------

Sorry to answer youre question, the internet is working on the imac with NTL but I can get the wireless router to work so that all the plaptops in the house can also connect.

Re: wireless router will not work with ntl broadband???

Unfortunately ADSL and Cable Broadband are different technologies and doesn't crossover.

Your best bet is to ebay the Netgear ADSL router (it's got the integral ADSL modem in it). You then buy yourself a standalone broadband Router (the WAN port of that plugs via ethernet to your modem or STB - and if you went back to ADSL could plug into a standard ADSL modem too). You can get a comgbined wireless router in whcih case you can ebay your Wireless Access Point too (and reduce some of the spaghetti wiring).

Re: wireless router will not work with ntl broadband???

I'm afraid ADSL and Cable routers are completely different - no way to get one working with the other.

How about ebaying the old ones to pay for a new Cable router? Your Wireless Access Point would work with a new wired Cable router. A wired router would only cost £20/30.

Re: wireless router will not work with ntl broadband???

Thanks for the info, I think I'll take your advice.

Ok I now have another issue. I have just informed my partner of this discussion and he has asked me to ask the following questions
- He has the netgear DG834GT which is a wireless router and modem, it is working with his bt bradband adsl no problems.
-can he use my wpn802 to enhance his wiresless range?
_ if so how does he connect it to his exisiting networking system?

Any ideas??????
