Sharing ntl cable modem between 2 PC's

Hi All,

I can see, from looking through the forums, that this question has been asked several times before. The question being; how do you share a modem between 2 PC's. Well, I'm pretty sure I know how to do this, but what I was concerned about was installing the cable modem on to the 2nd PC. Do ntl allow you to re-register the same modem twice? Using exactly the same details used in the 1st installation?

Sorry if this is obvious to you, but thanks.

You aren't actually reregistering the modem. You are just changing the device connected to the modem i.e. the computer. The ntl network, through the modem when it gets powered back on after you change the connection over, realises it has something different attached to it and issues the new connection details of IPs to the modem, and thus the modem to the new computer.

Thus it is the computer, not the modem that is the controlling factor. You can connect a number of different things to your modem, but only one of these at a time.

It's slightly different for users of Set top Boxes, where there is a formal registration proceedure needed for each new computer or device that is attached to the STB.

Re: Sharing ntl cable modem between 2 PC's

If you are sharing the modem with 2 PCs through a router then the router "registers" itself with the modem and any packets to/from the PCs are translated such that they look as though they are to/from the router and the modem does not know otherwise.

Re: Sharing ntl cable modem between 2 PC's

No I'm not using a router. The sharing of the modem will only be very temporary, so didn't want to invest in one. I'm simply going to have both PC's connect to the modem via ethernet, one only at a time obviously. I then believe its just a modem power off, connecting whichever PC I want online, powering up the modem, followed by powering up the PC?
