Newbie problem with Linksys and Telewest

Just upgraded from dial-up to Broadband on my Telewest line - engineer plugs in the modem, gives me a disk and some cables and disappears. I run the setup disk and after about 5 minutes of setting up, asks me to input my details and then crashes. This happens time and again but when I click my browser I'm already connected to the internet! So, on with the installation of the router - A kit with notebook card and router from Linksys. Set-up the router and the wireless, a bit of a faff but eventually it all works okay. However, when I try to access BBC radio player through the router, there's a problem. The internet disappears, if you know what I mean, and I need to switch the router and PC on and off again to get back to the internet. This also happens on the laptop through the router. If I plug the cable modem into the PC without the router, it works fine. Is there any quick fix to this?

Have you rebooted the modem (power off and on) when switching cable connections over to the router?

Yes, I have done that. It's not that I can't connect to the internet, it's just BBC radio-player site's streams which are through real-player. Only goes wrong through the router.

What model of router is it?

And does it only happen with RM streams from the BBC website or streams from other sources as well?

Yes, it seems as though it's all streams in real-player as well. The router is a Lynksys WKPC54G.

hmm, difficult to say exactly what might be playing up here. Does the problem repeat itslef whether you are using wired or wireless connections?

Re: Newbie problem with Linksys and Telewest

Solved it! Went into the settings of real-player and told it I was on an always on connection, not to dial for the internet. It may have been remembering my old dial-up settings. Quite why it let me connect without the router is anyone's guess, but I can access BBC radio throught the router finally. Hurrah!
