ntl 10 meg Which Wireless router ?

I am thinking of getting ntl and having the 10 meg Broadband , i have 2 pc's in the same room Whats the best wireless router to get.

If you have a look in the 'Networking' sub-forum you will find numerous recommendations threads (esp the sticky thread at the top).

A lot of people here, me included, use the Linksys WRT54G.

Since 8 Mbps (megabits per second) = 1 MB/sec (megabytes per
second), 54Mbps = 6.75MB/sec.

Actual throughput (I believe) is half, so at best, you'll get 3-3.5MB/sec transfer speeds on a 54g WiFi connection. Depending on the siting of your clients and router, interference will reduce this rate, as will encryption.

Summary: if you're on a 3MB connection or higher and using WiFi, you'll take a performance hit.

Infact, I've got a 11b router on 10 meg, and I can get 4-5 MB/sec from it

2nd 512K took 1032 ms = 496.1 KB/sec, approx 3770 Kbps, 3.7 Mbps
3rd 512K took 821 ms = 623.6 KB/sec, approx 4739 Kbps, 4.6 Mbps
4th 512K took 861 ms = 594.7 KB/sec, approx 4520 Kbps, 4.4 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 4314 Kbps, 4.2 Mbps

Are you using wired connection though? The B or G speed part only refers to wireless. I believe virtually all routers sold in the last few years have been 100mbps for wired connections.

I think you're confusing mbps raw bandwidth with mb/sec transfer rate? Downloading at 3mbps (like the 3meg services) isn't the same as 3mb/sec. On 3meg, you'd get 375k/sec without a router. On 10mbps, you'd only get 1.25mb/sec

As others have said,

Generally you factor by 9 or 10 to allow for network overhead
so 8mbps = approx 0.9 Mb/s
and 54Mb/s = 54 Mb/s

Remember 54Mb/s is half of ethernet 100Mb/s so I think it can handle
10mbps(approx 1Mb/s) over the net.

I'd say that's acceptable for 1mbps. The max speed is 125k/s minus overheads, and you are getting 118k/s I'd say thats respectable. You're within 0.05mbps = 50kbps, which is a dialup modem's difference. Neglible with 1meg
