Apple iBook Mac Ethernet connection

Hi,

This might be a bit of a long shot but here goes (hope this is in the right place too!)

I have just purchased an Apple iBook G4. I have ntl 2mb Broadband and have been trying to connect via Ethernet.

However, although the connection works fine on my standard PC, it doesn't seem to want to work on my iBook. I have set everything up as suggested, and also used the Broadband installer CD to see if that would make any difference. It didn't.

When connected to my PC (Windows XP), all necessary lights flash to indicate all is well. This happens for a while when connected to my iBook but then the indicator for the ethernet connection stops flashing.

I was just wondering if anyone has an iBook (or even MAC) and could tell me if the connection should work automatically, without me having to configure the connection (which I have done but still doesn't let me connect).

is there anything else I should be doing? I'm more familiar with Windows - this is all very new to me!

Thought so. Typical - sounds like I will have to ring Apple Support as I know the Ethernet works fine on my normal PC.

Have you gone to 'Network' in system preferences? It will have ethernet option there. Check to see its status

If its red, go into its settings. Go to Ethernet and select automatic for config

make sure you reboot the cable modem before connecting to the mac.

If you still can't get online, go to apple-> system prefs-> network-> and chose show "built in ethernet".

"configure IPv4" should show "using dhcp". Is there an ip address showing? If so, does it start 169, 192 or something else? If there is no ip showing, click "renew dhcp lease".

If you have changed anything click "apply now" then close.

The Status for Built in Ethernet, Network Server, Internet and Server is Failed, although it tells me the ISP is ok.

It then throws up the following message: 'could not find a PPPoE server

First, do you connect to the Internet through a STB or Cable Modem?

Second, each time you plug in a different device in, you need to unplug the Cable Modem or STB from the mains and plug it back in. Also, shut down the Mac.

Now, plug the Mac in, and plug the Cable Modem/STB into the mains. After all the lights have settled, switch on the Mac. If you have a Cable Modem, you should have an active network connection

If you have an STB, then just start up a web browser and go to http://start.ntl (I think). You will need your PID and PIN (you'll need to talk to Customer Services if you don't have these).

If you are connecting via Ethernet, you don't need the CD for either the PC or Mac (it won't actually work on the Mac anyway).

Note, the advice I gave above applies if you are switching back to the PC as well.

In the long run, it is easier to get a router, such as the Linksys WRT54G.

hmm. click on PPPoE server and untick "connect using PPPoE" then give it a go again.

I'm writing this message connected to the Internet from my new iBook......thank you for all of your help!

It seems that I had created quite a few 'connections' after trying to get connected. I deleted these and left the 'Automatic' connection and hey presto!
