Question Whats an I.P address?

My friend is being blamed for posting on a website, they are going by the IP address along with the mesage. However some other post have the same addrresess, he is also behind a router if that matters.
Is the IP dedicated to one pc or can it change.....help!!
Thanks for any help in advance

IP's can be both dynamic and dedicated.

Unless your friend pays specifically for the priviledge it's unlikely that he has a dedicated IP.

It's also possible that the forum admins in question do not know how to detect the difference between a proxy IP and a real one.

Is he an NTL customer? Each NTL customer has their own IP address, however NTL and other ISPs use transparent proxys, these also have an IP address and this is often the IP address that a site such as this sees unless they have taken the effort to recode the piece that captures the IP address.
So you need to ask them what IP address they consider him to be posting from, get him to use the connection button at the top of this forum to ascertain the IP he is using. This button at the top will highlight if he is going through a transparant proxy.
If he is they will need to recode their site.
If he is posting from a work location then everyone in that office will be posting from the same IP address, just as everyone behind a router in a house will be posting from teh same IP address.

Yes, you could try switching off your modem for a while, and hoping that the DHCP servers assign your old IP address to someone else. Then, when you next connect, the DHCP server will re-assign you an IP address as per normal, but it will be a different one to the previous IP address. There's no way of knowing how long it will take for the DHCP server to attribute your IP address to someone else however.

An alternative method would be to try using the ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew commands under Windows (from a command prompt). The first one releases the IP address, ie says that you no longer require it, whereas the second one requests a new IP address from the DHCP server. Theoretically it is possible to change IP using this method (and this is only theory cause chances are you'll get the same IP address back from the DHCP server anyway ).

Finally, you could always use ADSL. When I was on that, my connection was dropped systematically every 24 hours and a new IP address was assigned. This was in France, as I've not had ADSL in the UK. Alternatively, go back to dial-up as you get a new IP address each time you dial-in.

ps - the above comments are from a general networking perspective - I don't know how NTL configure their DHCP servers, so there may be some way they've configured their servers that affects all this.

You can get a new IP by changing the MAC address of the device connected to the cable modem (SACM or STB). This will give a new IP as the current IP is still leased to you and unavailable for reissue until the lease has expired.
