Wireless Newbie needs help

I'm trying to get my daughters lappy to hook up to my router (linksys WRT54G0) wirelessly but although the signal strenth reads 'Excellent' I can't seem to get it to pick up the internet. I'm ttally new to the world of wireless networking so any help would be appreciated. When I tried to 'Repair' the connection it tells me that it can't renew the IP address.

Is the lappy SSID the same as thats on the router?

Also on the router make the SSID discoveryable this might help to first set it up.

Yes to both of those. Do I have to manually specify an IP address on the lappy I'm trying to get connected?

the router should assign an IP for you

in the router should be an option for DCHP check that this is on.

You may need to reboot all the kit

Okay, done all that and rebooted but still getting 'Page cannot be displayed' on the lappy when I try to connect.

Any other ideas?

Sorryto be a pain in the neck but I'll have to start again.
I am unable to get connected to the router wirelessly from either lappy. I must be missing something pretty obvious here. The signal shows up as 'Excellent' but I'm at a loss as to what needs doing.

Okay, managed o connect to wireless network but now get 'Limited or no connectivity' and the message tells me that 'This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.

Any advice appreciated.

Change the SSID Address of the router, search it on your laptop.

When the laptop finds it connect 2 it, then once it is connected test the connection if it works go to http://192.168.1.1/ go into Security then set a passkey, WEP Pre-Shared Key Works better.

type the password into your laptop after you hav searched for the SSID agen, type that passkey into dat box den press connect.

Restart your laptop, restart your router, restart your cable modem.

COnnect to the neetwork agen oin your laptop it should work then.

Sorry guys but I'm still having problems with this. As mentioned, I am getting a message telling me that 'There is limited or no connectivity'. When I try to 'repair' the link, I get told that 'This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer'
Any ideas? I'm sure I'm nearly there.

Have you plugged the lappy into the router via a cable?

The SSID must be identical on all kit.

Have you set the security to the same standard?

The lappy is connected to the router via a cable. When I go into 'Wireless Networks' and click on the properties of my network in 'Association' the name of my network it is 'greyed out' in the top box titled 'Network name (SSID). Network authentification is 'Open' and 'Data Encryption' is WEP. How do I 'un grey' the network name?

You cannot hav a wireless connection and a wired connection 2 the router at the same time theres a connection conflict, turn your wireless off and turn your Wired Lan Connection on

Start, Control Panel, Network Connections.

Right click on wireless, disable.

Right click on the Wired Lan Connection and click enable.

This shud solve all your broadband problems.
