AOL Broadband - Wireless Connection cant acquire ip address

The router is a Thomson speedtouch 576 Router

Everything is okay until it starts acquiring IP address then it can't find it and I have the message Network connection: tippinghousehold, Speed 48.0 Mbps, Signal strength: excellent, Status; Limited or no connectivity.

If I plug the Ethnet cable into the laptop it works fine.

What is happening can anyone help.

Is there any other pc on the wireless network? Do you run a firewall at all, what make and model laptop are you using and what operating system is it?

Re: AOL Broadband - Wireless Connection cant acquire ip address

My partner only brought the laptop earlier this month. Not sure what the make and model are but I will ask and post back as soon as he tells me as I am not at home.

Windows XP with Windows Firewall not sure if it's activated I haven't gone in and done anything, but it probably was already pre installed.

I also have Norton Security and there's AOL Spyware in use.

Have you tried stopping Norton from running at windows startup and then reboot to see if the problem still persists.

Do you have any other wireless PC's on there at the same time? IIRC, AOL supply the router preconfigured - it's not inconceivable they only provide a DHCP range of 1! 'Limited or no connectivty' usually means it's connected to the access point (router) but didn't get an IP address.

Re: AOL Broadband - Wireless Connection cant acquire ip address

another possibility would be misfigured wep settings... not had much experience with thomson routers, but a quick google search suggest they are wep enabled, rather than wpa. came across a very similar problem before christmas, albeit with a belkin router
you should be able to access the routers settings by typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.2 into an internet explorer address bar

Re: AOL Broadband - Wireless Connection cant acquire ip address

The laptop is a HP pavilion dv8025EA.

And no there are no other pc's connected.

Just told him to try to disable norton and try again.

---------- Post added at 11:18 ---------- Previous post was at 11:02 ----------

Apparently norton will not disable.

He disables norton but on start up it restarts.

How can you disable it on start up?

Cheers

Re: AOL Broadband - Wireless Connection cant acquire ip address

u can stop norton running on startup by goin to start>>run >> type in msconfig and press OK....on the system configuration screen that comes up, click on the Startup tab along the top. and untick any entries relating to norton... might be worthwhile making a note of what you untick.. so you can retick them later. once you apply and ok, you'll be prompted to restart
