network problem

My son has a Nintendo DS and the USB dongle to allow wifi play, but we can't get it to work.

Our set up is 2 pcs cabled to a router, router to modem. There are no problems with the network between computers or the wide wide world. The DS can link to the USB dongle, but the dongle cannot link to the internet. I found this from http://www.livejournal.com/users/aniki21/62771.html

Apparently, the problem is that ntl's system won't allow more than one machine per broadband cable line. With a router in place, the modem and their network only "see" one computer, but with the DS's connection-sharing setup through the USB Connector, it looks to the ntl network that more than one machine is accessing the connection and the second one is prevented from accessing.

Any bright people here know of a way round this problem?

can i just clarify, the usb dongle that you have- (i've never seen a DS so lots of guesswork here) that is a wireless adaptor right? connects to the DS via USB?

Presumably you have a wireless router? what make and model is it?

The DS has wifi built in, so if you have a wireless router you shouldn't have any problems.

BTW, you need wifi enabled games for it to look for a connection

Chris: My home network is not wireless, which is why I need the usb dongle.
Jellybaby: Son desperate to play Mario Kart online!

nintendo forums full of people with connection problems, but few seem to address possible problems behind wired routers. Not being a network expert I wondered if anyone had any clue here.

I have followed the instructions below about changing the router's LAN address.
If the LAN address is 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, we recommend changing it to 192.168.2.1 in order to avoid a conflict that will likely prevent the Nintendo Wi-Fi USB Connector from installing.

I am only running Windows Firewall at present incase ZA was causing a problem, and even with Windows f/w off I can't connect to the internet from the ds

I don't think you'll need to change your router's address.

Ermmm....

So this USB adapter, do you then plug this into your router with a cable?

If its a usb dongle then I'm assuming that the OP has cable modem plugged in on ethernet to the PC and is plugging the usb wireless dongle into the Pc. Not sure how this could work but if she ran internet sharring that might do it.

It sounds like the DS is set to accept wireless through a router and get a ip via DHCP though.

The dongle goes in the usb port on one of the pc's. I believe the software that comes with it sets up internet connection sharing, though network properties does not show it as using internet connection sharing?
