How do I set up a wireless network?
Happy new year every-one.Here goes with a question that you may have heard a hundred times before,but I'm so confused by all the different options that when it comes to going in to PC World or wherever my brain seems to turn into a sponge cake in front of the wireless networking section.
What I want to know is what products I need to buy to set up a wireless network for my main PC connected at present by a Motorola 5100 surfboard cable modem.Iv'e just got a Wi-Fi laptop so I want both to have internet access.Also there is a desk top PC upstairs which I might as well do at the same time.
Is it possible to have a set-up where I can have internet access for the lappy without having to have the main PC switched on all the time?

You would be best off buying a cable router, and wireless cards.

You need a wireless cable router - NOT one with an ADSL modem - as well as a wireless adaptor for each wireless PC (built in or otherwise).
If you search around the forum there should be plenty of recommendations!

You want to buy a wireless router. The Linksys WRT54g is a popular choice. You will also need a wireless pci card for the pc. This will give internet access for both machines independently (i.e. neither needs to be on for the other to have access).

I personally recommend the Linksys WRT54G router. but there are more recommendations at http://www.cableforum.co.uk/forum/article.php?a=74
You will also need a Wireless network card. I personally find that d-link make some good ones.
When you have everything up and running, I would recommend you go to http://www.cableforum.co.uk/forum/article.php?a=12 and find out how to secure it (especially if you live near busy roads or car parks - I left my network unsecured for a while, and when I checked the logs on the routers, found two PCs that were using my network, but were nothing to do with me)
BTW, while I like your thread title (big fan of Peter Kay myself), but I think it needs to be a little more descriptive, so I have changed it.

OK it looks like a trip to Comet then (thanks Iain),for a Linksys 54gses.
If this is positioned close to the main PC,can I connect the router and PC with a cable (RJ45 ethernet) and just have a wireless network for the upstairs PC and laptop ?
