Networking help really needed!

I need to share the files between two computers, as well as the NTL broadband internet connection provided via a SACM and hooked-up via Ethernet. In the host machine I have two NICs (one for connecting to the SACM, one to the client) and in the client I have one. Both machines are running XP (confusingly, the host running XP Home and the client running XP Pro). They're hooked-up via a crossover cable between the two, no router.

Can I get the sodding thing to work? Can I heck as like!

I've tried running the Network Setup Wizard to not much avail. I've managed to get them to speak to each other by setting the host to 10.0.0.2 and the client to 10.0.0.4 and then enabling ICS (therefore changing the client from a fixed IP to an assigned IP - currently 192.168.0.140 - and the host to 192.168.0.1). They'll share the shared documents, but nothing else.

And sharing the internet connection? It's just not happening. I have the broadband connection on the host setup to share fine, but the client just gives a page not found.

I managed to get the client to recognise (in its Network Connections) 'Broadband Connection via HOST'. IE still wouldn't connect to the net so I rebooted both machines and, lo and behold, everything disappears again.

Please help!!

Windows Firewall is enabled on both machines and it's working fine. Wonder if it's good enough to run perminently?

Try disabling Windows Firewall temporarily.

Only the one problem.. I can only access the shared documents of each on each machine. Any way I could access everything else - like the second HD in the host, for example?

I take it you've tried to share the entire 2nd HDD?

Yeah, but my thinking was (and in my experience, this does happen) that Windows Firewall is perfectly capable of blocking file sharing even if it appears to be working properly.

Re: Networking help really needed!

I've never used anything more than Windows XP firewall since the release of SP2. The router I currenty has, has a decent firewall in it too but mt previous one which was a horrible netgear cheapo thing didn't have a firewall as such & I had no problems. It's important to have automatic updates running though & make sure any updates are installed ASAP.
