Question has my mate been ripped off?

My mate has had Blueyonder for ages now and she has a pc in her sons bedroom. So blueyonder is installed here. Shes just bought a laptop for here daughter an intel celeron m with wireless. She has bought a wireless router and a laptop wifi card. I said to her "Why have you got a card the laptop has it built in. She says the man at the shop said because you have blueyonder you need one of these. Has she been ripped off?

Re: has my mate been ripped off?

Which laptop is it? If it has built in wifi it's not needed - but if it's a USB of course it could be used on another PC.

Nice sig - almost worth repping!

Certainly looks like it to me, if the laptop has built in wireless (which almost all do these days) then she doesn't need a seperate wireless card as well.

Lol.

------

Take it she has a cable router as well as a wifi card, integrated or otherwise, on each PC?

The only difference in networking terms between DSL and Cable is that Cable modems are locked to the network, DSL ones aren't - which shouldn't be a problem so long as the DSL modem isn't USB. Which it tends to be In essence, there is no difference between a wireless card for a PC or LT whether or not it connects via a router to cable, or a router to DSL.

Either she's misinterpreted the salesman or been ripped off, but she should be able to get a refund if it's not needed- but let's ascertain exactly what she DOES have and work out what's needed first.

You need a wireless cable router and a wireless card for each PC. Unless you can connect some via cable to the router- if they're close enough and static there's no need to go wireless.

Understand?

Re: has my mate been ripped off?

Did she tell the salesman she had a built in WIFI with her laptop? If not he may have just assumed she would need the card. Get her to take it back for a refund as long as it's not been opened.

Re: has my mate been ripped off?

Before taking that back, make sure the router isn't an ADSL one, or that'll need taking back as well!

andybarker is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: has my mate been ripped off?

Centrino chipset does not always include the wifi functionality. So it is possible that the chipset doesn't have built in and that you did need the wireless card

Not all the laptops in PC World or Currys have WiFi facility inbuilt either...

Re: has my mate been ripped off?

quite a few bundled w/routers with usb w/adaptors available, its just possible the bundle was cheaper or same price as just the router

Giving the salesman loads of credit here though, which is probably misplaced

EDIT : but those are more often than not ADSL units, so that woudl still be wrong

Re: has my mate been ripped off?

Might want to actually tell us what laptop she has (specific model) so we can see if it has any form of WI-FI built in but since you have remained quiet on the matter after posting your remarks in the orignal post I'm thinking that either you have:
a. Made an error in thinking she was ripped off and the laptop had no built in capabilities as described
or
b: forgotten your thread here
