Router to Router MAC address cloning

Hi all

About to replace old router:

Linksys BEFSR41 v2

with new router to enable the 10Mb (ok 5Mb via the Samsung STB!) NTL service:

Linksys WRT54G

I know the current router's MAC address (on the WAN port) is registered with NTL. I can see this MAC address in the Setup page of the router.

Question:

When I get the new router, can I connect it, go to 192.168.1.1, clone the current router's MAC address to it in the "clone MAC address" page, thus saving the NTL registration screen (start.ntl)???

you should be able to.
i changed over from a linksys BEFSR41 to a d-link DGL-4300 by cloning the linksys mac saving me a rereg.

Alternatively, you can just connect up the router, lima. IIRC when you power up and open your browser, you should be taken to a page where you can register the new MAC - you'll need your username and password. AFAIK you can have two MACs registered at a time; after that you'll have to delete one to register another. Used to be like that when I had an STB.

Or, as deadlite says, you should have no problem cloning the MAC.

Thanks for the advice guys I wil give the cloning a go and if that doesn't work I'll register it as a "new" device.

As Patrickp says, there is no need to clone the mac address of router, why look for complications when it is just a straightforward swop?

I've changed NIC cards & routers at different times and never cloned the mac address as some people seem to be convinced that you have to.

Keep it simple!
