Different Networking Problem...

Hi cable forum, i need some help...

I have recently purchased a Wireless G Broadband Router and USB Network Adapter. What i want to do (and apparently you can) is connect the broadband router to the NTL cable modem (not connecting this to the pc) and obviously connecting the USB Adapter to the PC. What i then need to do is connect both devices together (no problems so far) however get the internet working (the problem). Any ideas people? Oh by the way, is there anywhere i can purchase a shorter colaxial cable?

I'm sure you can do this, perhaps you can post a specific link to the router and USB adapter you have bought.

It can be simplest to get the router up and running first, doing all the initial setup using a wired connection, then change the PC connection over to wireless.

Remember to power cycle (off then on) the ntl modem when you attach the router, having disconnected the PC.

Regarding the coaxial ntl cable, it's best not to mess with that. Changes in length or a poorly made connection on the end of the cable can affect the signal quality from the ntl network messing up your connection. If you do ever need an ntl engineer to visit, as them nicely and they may shorten the cable for you while they are there, meantime just leave the excess loosly coiled in a corner.

What model/make of router do you have? Does it say it is an ADSL or DSL router? If so, it may not be compatible with NTL's network, as this needs a Cable compatible router.

Can you connect to the internet by connecting straight to the modem?

Assuming you can, you need to unplug the modem from the mains, then switch off the router. Now, plug the router into the Cable Modem. Then swtich the Cable Modem on. Wait a minute for the lights to settle, and switch the router on.

Now, plug a PC in (if possible) to the router and switch it on. I recommend this as you need to check you have a working connection before you try and use a wireless connection. That way, if the computer can attach to the net with a wired connection, but cannot with a wireless connection (which is entirely possible), we can be sure the problem is with the wireless connection, rather than the connection from the router to the Cable Modem.

Thanks for the fast response

It works... As said above the modem is connected to the router (i bought this out of pc world and is cable compatible apparently "i did check") the router and adapter connect no problem. I plug the modem into ethernet port 1 and that works too. I pull port one out and the internet disables... thats where the problem is occuring...

Err, so you are disconnecting the router from the Cable Modem?

If so, you can't. The router needs to be physically connected to the Cable Modem, as NTL Cable Modems cannot use wireless connections. You can use wireless connections to the other devices, such as PCs though.

The router needs to be next to the modem. The router must always have a wired connection to the modem.

The wireless connection will be between the router and the PC. But to set things up is can be easiest if you initially wire between the PC and router, later converting to wireless.

No im disconnecting the PC from the router and leaving the cable modem where it is for the usb adapter to connect and run the internet.

hmm, you are rebooting the computer when you switch over from the wired connection to wireless USB adaptor? You have loaded the necessary drivers for the USB adaptor? When you check hardware devices (control panel) there are no itmes inaccessible due to t question marks or errors?

Please do post the make and model of your router and the USB adaptor.

At a guess it's the one in the sale? A Linksys WRT54GSUK and WUSB54GS for £52? How did you connect to the modem previously? USB or Ethernet? What is the Router status page showing in terms of connections to the internet?

I have just rebooted, same problem guys, it is the one in the PCWorld sale for Ãƒâ€šÃ‚Â£52...

This is the picture (as attached below) when the ethernet is removed from the router from the PC not the modem.

Have you enabled any wireless security on the router?

If so, make sure the key is the same on the router and the USB device. If these are different it won't work properly.
