NTL Cable Modem / Laptop Connection Issue

Ok, this is going to get rather long winded, but really my first question is, does the NTL Cable Modem (the little blue one (NTL:250) not the solver one) stop me from taking the Ethernet out of the desktop and putting it into a laptop?

Strange question I know, but this is what I did, I took the cable that runs from my desktop pc to the modem and made it go from the modem to the laptop (laptop is a Dell D505, Win2K) and it can not assign an IP and connect to the net even though there are no preset network settings on the laptop (i.e., no static IP, DNS set).

Is there something screwy with the NTL router or my Laptop? I did search the forums for threads like this but didn't have anything jump out at me, if anyone knows why it will not plug and play please let me know. Thanks

Hi, and to the forums.

You need to turn the modem off completly. Wait a minute. Then switch on again. Then turn on the new laptop.

to Cable Forum

Basics first, you have switched off the power on the modem and PCs, then swapped cables, then switched on modem, let that settle for a short while, then switched on the PC or Lappy.

You can have only one connection at a time (nothing else on or even plugged in).

Re: NTL Cable Modem / Laptop Connection Issue

Yer, I have a (Belkin) router waiting to be put in... I lost the cross over cable that will run from the modem to the router, so ATM, I was looking for a work around...

Ok, I will try powering down the laptop and the modem and swaping the cable over from the desktop. Wish me luck.

Here goes nothing chewy.

EDIT: It worked, thanks guys I am on the laptop now. Why does it do that is the NTL router a little fruity? Ah well as soon as I get the router in I will not to mess around like that.

Thanks again doods.

Re: NTL Cable Modem / Laptop Connection Issue

Some STBs require a cross over cable between the STB and PC (or router). Most modems will want a straight through (standard) ethernet cable.

It is standard that modems or STBs can only expect to communicate with one device (PC, router, etc) at a time. That is inherent in the internal electronics. Untill they are reset they simply cannot see that the device they speak to has changed.
