Problems with using NTL broadband with router...

Hi guys,

I just purchased a BEFSR41 Linksys router (4-port), and connected the Internet port with a ethernet cable to the NTL set-top box.

Then I connected one ethernet cable from the router to my Mac upstairs, and one ethernet cable to my PC downstairs. The PC uses a USB to Ethernet adaptor (Belkin F5D5050UK).

I cannot get any internet connections on both computers, and I heard that you don't need to do any configuration for NTL broadband e.g username , passwords, and that I should simply set it to Obtain I.P Address automatically.

Any help?

Anyone else used the same hardware or been in the same situation?

Did you power off the set top box while you were plugging everything in? You should power it all down, plug in leads, power up STB, allow lights to lock on, power up router, allow lights to settle, power up PC.

Basic steps first. You have powered down your STB and everything else, after you've wired up the router?

With a STB you need to register the router as a new computer on ntl's network. You should get taken to the page automatically when you try to browse the internet. If not try entering "start.ntl" or an IP address 172.16.30.84" in the Internet explorer address box.

Or clone the already registered MAC address onto the router if all else fails.

Alright guys,
I will try this tomorrow and see how far I get with it. I think the problem is, on the router setup page, I'm selecting Obtain I.P Automatically, and it is saying my internet I.P address is 0.0.0.0.

Maybe this is supposed to be, but I'm sure its not :S

just try setting it up on the windows pc first as i found i could not get to the NTL reg page on a mac or firefox!

I have the same router and has been working well for well over 2 years now!!!

Just a thought but my now removed pace stb needed a crossover cable before i could connect?

Most of the newer STBs require a standard cable but a few of the older models needed X-over. If it needs X-over it will normally have a sticker or marking on the back of the STB near the ethernet port.

That's what i was thinking Paul. My PC detected an ethernet conection but wouldn't connect to the internet. A mega cheap X-over adaptor solved my problem with the same router
