Wireless Internet??

Hi as you may be aware i am new here, so first of all apologies if I have posted this in the wrong section.



Anyway, I have a pc downstairs with 1MB broadband supplied by NTL, and my son would like broadband upstairs in his bedroom, so I rang NTL last night and tried to purchase the £17.99 a month broadband package, but they were very reluctant to sell it to me and suggested I got wireless internet, so basically, how do I get wireless internet? What do I need? How much will it cost? And how do I set it up?



Once again sorry if this is in the wrong section.



I would really appreciate some help.

you would need to get a wireless router & a wireless network card for your son's pc.

Do you already connect via a network card (ethernet) yourself, if not you will be much easier if you did, ordinary network cards are very cheap.

You would connect the modem/set top box to the router with a network cable & connect your PC to the router, again with a network cable. Your son would connect via the wireless link.

Cost varies, but you should be able to get a wireless router & card for around £50 - £60, setup is fairly easy, in most cases a 'wizard' on the installation CD will guide you through it.

I don't know too much about connections and what not, all i know is that i conect via NTL's broadband package £17.99 a month 1MB

As for the network card, would that need to be put inside my PC?

np, you will either be connected by an ethernet (RJ45) cable, which looks like a telephone (RJ11) cable, but with slightly larger plugs, or by an USB cable, which has the usual flat rectangular USB plug.

If your PC doesn't have a network card fitted/built in, then it would be necessary to fit one, yes, however this is a very easy job.

Basically there is no need for you to pay an additional broadband connection. Save yourself the money and share the connection you have. This is what a lot of people do and is where the word "router" comes in as this lets you sperate your NTL connection.

Im guessing at the moment you have your NTL modem that either hooks up to your PC via a USB connection, or an ethernet cable into the back of your PC.

A router lets you share a connection and wireless ones lets you do this without having to run cables all over your house.

You dont need to have a wireless ethernet card in each PC as the one near the router could be linked via normal ethernet cable.
If you dont dont connect via ethernet, an ethernet card costs about £10 and fits into a spare PCI slot in your PC.

Just have a look behind your computer to see what sort of way you are connecting your PC to the NTL modem.

You would then simply need to put a wireless network card into your son's PC and these can either be put in to a PCI slot or be connected externally.
The wireless router would connect to your own PC via ethernet wire and then you hook up the NTL modem to the router.

It should cost you about £50 in all. And then you know that you are only paying one connection, and not 2, which saves you money, and you can use it to transfer files on your own network too.

I've had a look and i really can't tell, all i can tell you is that i have a NTL Box in the wall from which, one of the cables from the Broadband Box connects into.

For an NTL connection make sure you go for a router that is for Cable, not ADSL.

noooooooo, use a online retailer instead.

linksys wrt54g gets great reviews from people here.
From that use any wireless 54g card.

Netgear or DLink are 2 makes that come to mind. As much for the fact that they have good software with them that automates much of the setup procedure.

No doubt there are other makes which have good setup oftware too, but be wary. The cheaper items can be a pain to configure.

Below is the kit you will require.

Also fair play to the ntl chap/chapess they suggested the correct thing for you

Try one of these they cost £53.30 and will allow you to connect 4 pc's with wires and loads wireless too.



One of these for your sons pc costing £27.41


Total cost £80.71

Or.... the cheaper option...
One of these costing £28.19



with one of these costing £16.44

I've found that any by Linksys or Netgear have been very easy to set up with good documentation and setup wizard guides.

Would i need to buy one of the £53.30 aswell as the £28.19 wirless routers??

Or can i just buy the £28.19 Router and the £16.44 Wirless card?

Sorry theres 2 options one is to use linksys kit (router/card) the other is to use ebuyer cheap kit. They should both do fine and both will then allow you to share files/printers between computers I just thought I'd give you a option to save some money.

I have used linksys and belkin wireless kit but find the belkin a bit weak on signal strength so much so that I get better performance from a 11mbs linksys than a 54mbs belkin one.
