Unhappy Setting up a router with the 250 cable modem

I have just reciently got online with NTL broadband.
I want to use a router so that I can have more than 1 computer connected to the Internet at a time.
I presently have the 250 cable modem plugged directly into my computers ethernet port. I had to install the disk software that came with the modem to be able to get connected. I have tried to plug the modem into a router and then connect from the router to my machine, but this did not work. I am unsure about how to work with NTL settings, as I seem to have an unusual IP address:
81.110.253.x (I'm not handing out the last number just in case some wise guy wants to get onto my machine).

So, how can I set the router up to get and IP address from NTL and use this with NAT or ICS to share the connection with another computer?

I am worried that the NTL software has directed that the IP address has to be given to the network card of my machine and cant be shared.

Re: Setting up a router with the 250 cable modem

hi knowhal...
welcome to the forum
should be straighforward to get this working, turn off the pc/pc's , the modem and the router.may be worthwhile to remove the catv cable from the modem too..might not be neccesary, but from experience have found that by doing this the first time, it might save you repeating the procedure. once the catv has been out for 10 or so seconds, screw it back in and power up the modem, with all leads connected. wait for the sync and rdy to lock on, then power up the router, again with all leads connected, and again wait for any lights that should lock on, to stay on. finally boot up the pc/pc's. should be job done.
the pc's should have an IP address begining with 192
