Probably an ADSL or cable modem with an Ethernet connection instead of a USB. I don't know about the cable modem supplied to you by NTL as they have a few models. It probably does have an ethernet connection. The one I used to have, had both connections.

There are two ways you can connect your computer directly to your modem, Mike: one is with a USB lead, and the other is by ethernet.

Ethernet is generally superior to USB for this, as it offers better bandwidth, more flexibility and - last but not least - better reliability. It is the same kind of connection as you use to set up computer networks, so, if you're connecting with ethernet, you have the option to include a router in your setup.

A router is a sort of network distributer: you connect your computers to it, and your modem, and then the computers can all access the internet, and, if you set up permissions, each other. Most routers also incorporate a type of firewall called a NAT firewall, which makes for a very effective part of your security for accessing the internet.

And, yes, most or all of ntl's modems provide for an ethernet connection, unlike the vast majority of ADSL service providers, who only offer modems with a USB connection.

Re: What is a ethernet modem

Yep all NTL modems have ethernet connections.
There are some ADSL modems that have USB connections instead.
Its always best to use an ethernet connection to hook up to the net.

Re: What is a ethernet modem

Either that, or it's a USB connection - I can't tell from that picture. Is there a little clip at the bottom holding the plug in the socket?

If there is, it's Ethernet. If there isn't, it's USB.

Yep thats Ethernet.
You can easily spot a USB connection as it would have this symbol near it looking like one of these strange tree things below:
