Router - specific IP address for specific devices

Hi all

I've had a Netgear WGR614v6 for years and years now, and it suits me pretty well except for 3 things:

1. It's wireless G
2. It sometimes wont hand out IP addresses
3. Although it supposedly can allow you to specify a particular IP address to a specific device, it usually just allocates the next available one instead. This is a real pain for connecting media streamers and FTP

So I need an N router that can do all those (connecting to my 10Mbs VM modem)

Anyone got any recommendations?

This Buffallo WHR-G300NV2 looks like a possibility, but I can't figure out if you can force allocate IP addresses, and if so whether it actually works

Does anyone use it?

Edit: I don't care that it isn't Gigabit as I'll only be using it with wifi or cabled to a media streamer that can only do 100Mbs anyway

This the router I have just bought:

It does what you need it to on the stock firmware but can be flashed with DD-WRT firmware which make it even better. It is a bargain for the features it offers and I can vouch for its performance and features. No brainer if your budget is right.

Often you can specifically set an IP address for a device, on the device itself rather than relying on the router.

Ensure the router has a reserved range of IPs that it can't allocate, so if you are in the range of 192.168.1.xx set it so that it will only allocate to 192.168.1.100-150.

On devices such as windows computers, then simply edit the network connection TCP/IP properties to use a fixed IP address outside the allocated range i.e. 192.168.1.50, rather than picking up stuff dynamically. You'll probably also need to set the gateway (router IP address), subnet and DNS.

I've already figured that at £20 the obvious way to find out is just to buy one - put the order in before Ben's reply.

But if it's no good I'll have a look at the TP-Link.

Rob, yes that's plan B - trying to avoid it though as I want to do as little to the settings on my PC as possible in case I break anything

Let us know how you get on with the new one when it arrives. You should be ok with Buffalo, I have heard good things about them! £20 is definitely a bargain and I would be surprised if you can't reserve IP addresses of specific devices on it.

Will do - certainly the user guide says you can - but then, so does the user guide for the netgear
