Disableing onboard networking and using stand alone network card.

Hi all,

I've come across a small issue. I'd like to be able to use a stand alone network card.....BelkinF5D5005 instead of plugging in to the network socket on the motherboard. When I plug the cable into the new card and re-boot etc, etc I get the "network card is unplugged message" on the taskbar.

Am I doing something wrong here? Do I need to disable the on board first?

Doubtful, one thing to check is that the new card is installed and showing properly in device manager. Also is this the cable you have used up till now or a new cable?

If left enabled then both cards should appear in the device manager and the unplugged card will give the error on the taskbar, this though doesn;t mean to say that the 2nd card isn't working.

To get rid of the warning either disable the device in the bios or device manager or turn off the warning in network properties for that card

Yes I'm using the same cable. The card is not showing in device manager. Do i need to reinstall it? I dont have to disable the on board. I'd just like to use the stand alone card instead.

If the 2nd card is not showing in Network Adaptors in the device manager (it might be as unknown PCI device in the device manager) then yes you probably need drivers for it.

Latest drivers are at http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/...a_id/542/p/200 please note there is more than once version V1 & V2 and the drivers are different.

The "unplugged" message though will still be your original card

I have the latest drivers and i cant see anything "out of sorts" in device manager. Maybe i should re install the card....physicaly??

Probably, just reseat it (you might need to default the resource data in the bios)

If it still doesn't "show" then take a screen shot of device manager, if you see any yellow or red symbols those are the ones we need to know about.

Click on the driver tab and see if it says the driver is not installed (take a screen shot but if possible resize it a bit smaller this time), did the card come with a CD? Your network cable will read as unplugged until the card is installed properly.

Yes card came with a CD and i've just tried re-installing the drivers from it and it tells me that i have the latest. I also noticed that in the driver detail box it mentions realtec which is what the on board is....wierd. Sorry for the oversized pic before.

try it in a different PCI slot there could be an IRQ conflict.
