Hi all, if i were to setup a small rural WISP, what is the calculation for the required bandwidth, i.e if i had 20 customers a 20 meg line would be needed, as not everyone uses it on average customers will get 4 meg, or something like that.... thanks in advance
There isn't one really. But as a guide someone like Virgin allocates about 100kbps per customer at peak times. If you've 20 customers and are offering on average 4Mbit you'll probably be ok with purchasing 4Mbit.
Hi, thanks for that mate, i was hoping there would be a be some kind of equation that i can show off to my customer tehe, but i can write something up along the lines of how to be better than virgin!
No equation really, depends on how good you want the service to be to be honest.
If you want people to get full speed all the time you deliver more bandwidth, if you don't care so much just use less.
For only 20 people if you are giving them 4Mbps each 4Mbps is probably about ok, perhaps a little bit more to accommodate downloading and streaming simultaneously, say 5 or 6.
