Question printer sharing

hi to everyone ,
set up is as follows:-windows xp desktop
lexmarkx2350 printer
hp laptop vista home basic
route dynamode

after following all instructions on printer sharing i still cannot access the printer though the network,the closest iv,e got is to get it working though my setup is it works but knocks my desktop off the internet, i,m doing something wrong somewhere is there anyone who could point me in the right direction.

Hi Les, could you let us know how it's cabled up... where does the printer plug into?? It's more than likely an issue connecting between XP and Vista machines.

I take it it prints fine from the PC it's connected to??

thanks for the quick reply in answer to your questions they as follows:-
printer to desktop by usb cable works ok
printer to laptop usb prints ok
laptop back to wireless connection as problem stated

I think it depends on the drivers. AFAIK some USB based printers just don't work via Printer sharing.

Better to try and find a cheap Wi-Fi printer instead

I bought the HP Photosmart C4380 for £70 which is a fantasic printer and the Wi-Fi works really well (although like all HPs the software is a bit bloated), however it seems to be have been discontinued

thanks for suggestion,it seems iv,e two options open to me:-
1,buy a new printer
2,use it with the usb lead every time i won,t to print
once again thanks ,but if anyone else has any ideas please let me no.

Do you have file and printer sharing enabled on both machines?

Are you able to share files across the network?

When the printer is connected to the desktop are you able to browse across the network from the laptop and see the printer?

thanks for your reply the answer to all your questions is yes.
i think i will give up on it and do it the hard way and connect by usb as i no it works that way.
