Router\Switch to use with Homeplug

Hi there,

I'm trying to setup a home network using Homeplug (networking via the mains).
I have an NTL 250 cable modem and 2 Homeplugs (and two PCs to connect to the Internet). The modem is using the ethernet port on my first PC so I cannot plug a homeplug into it. So, I believe I need a router or switch so my setup would be: -

moden -> router\switch
Then one cable going from the router\switch to PC number 1;
And another cable going from the router\switch to a homeplug;
Then another Homeplug upstairs connected to PC number 2.

Would this work?

Also, is it a router I need? Like this: -

Or a switch? Like this: -

Thanks in advance.

Yes, this will work, and the setup you describe is correct. You want the router, not the switch.

Re: Router\Switch to use with Homeplug

I have that router. Not bad at all. Nice and easy to setup too.

Re: Router\Switch to use with Homeplug

You can buy one with wireless for £5 - 10 more (depending on model).

Might be worth it case you get a laptop later and want to connect via wireless.
you can turn it off if you don't need it at the moment.
