Does vista have a security feature i don't know about for routers and modems

I have have a virgin media modem with 4mb connection (wired) and an addon router everything works fine except if i turn power off to the computer for any length of time like overnight it and then try again the next day to turn it on i have to refresh modem and then router i phone vm helpline they said i should switch off power to the modem but not the router and this should solve the problem as the modem disconnects from their servers after certain length of time unused is their any settings i can use to keep the modem and router live so i dont have to refresh everytime i boot up pc

I have Vista Ultimate, Buffalo Router, and 4Mb (Leeds NW).

I switch my computer off every night (but not my router or modem), and have never had to refresh the modem or router.

I have never had my modem "disconnect" from the VM network because the PC has been powered down.

I wonder what it can be then i tried a netgear router before that and it was worse it was everytime i switched off the pc i had to refresh

could it be the battery inside or does that have nothing to do with the settings

The router should be sufficient to keep the connection alive - basically you have 2 connections to 2 networks and the router is the middle man. A bit like making a phone call to someone on a different dialling code to you. You need to dial the code to get through...

Which make and model router are you using? Is the modem connected directly to the router by Ethernet, or is the modem connected to a PC by USB and then the PC connected to the router by Ethernet? That would cause it to disconnect as the PC is switched off, because the PC gets its IP directly from VM by DHCP (whereas the router would do this).

It would also help if you posted using punctuated sentences as opposed to just writing in one long sentence, as it is easier for us to understand your post so we don't make any mistakes or dismiss it as we can't see what you're trying to say.

sorry about the sentences

the router is a addon wbr9200 cable wireless router.
the cable modem is connected directly by ethernet to the routers internet port.

the router then has the port 1 ethernet cable to my wired pc which is not always on

the port 2 has a ethernet cable to a mybook 1tb storage drive which is permenantly on

Well, it's wired correctly! I don't hold much hope for the router being any good though. Best investing in a quality piece of kit - Linksys WRT54GS or GL are about the best. I have a GL and it's been rock solid. Your router sounds like a POS to me, tbh.

i have changed back to my original router which is a linksys wrt54g hope this works better.

i tried a netgear router which i got from virgin and no good same problems if not worse it would not let me connect after everytime i shutdown.

then the addon router i had the problems with it on a morning.

i'll let you know about this one but i think it maybe some settings in the router not keeping the connection to the modem live and the modem is disconnecting from the server or it maybe the 1tb western digital storage device connected to port 2 i switched this to port 1 and the computer to port 2 i don't know if this wil make any difference.

if its not them im wondering if its vista somehow a piece of software the only thing i have installed that i can think of is mionet a program that came with the storage device to let you remotely connect to the storage drive.
