wireless network problem!!

I have had an NTL Connection for 4 years and no probs. It is hard wired into the wall of the flat in Peterborough and is showing a 2 Meg speed.

The missus got a laptop and it has a wireless adaptor and forund local networks easily. I bought a PCI wireless network card, then a D link dsl-g604t router but cant connect the router because of the hard wiring of the NTL/Virgin modem.

Anybody know what I can do to get a network going please?

Ok what have you done so far? Basically you connect the modem output to the WAN port on the router and then connect everything else to the router itself.
One thing to do is power off everything before changing any physical connections to the modem, once the connections are changed over power up the modem, wait for the lights to lock/ settle, power up the router, wait for lights to lock/ settle and then power up the PCs. At this point open a browser on the pcs connecting to the router and see if you can access the router settings page, if you can then all should be well as long as the modem is "talking" to the router. If you cannot access the router page then something is wrong between PC and router.

Unfortunately if you are getting your broadband via cable routers that have an inbuilt ADSL modem are incompatible. The router you have purchased won't work.

You need a simple broadband router with wireless access point that can use a separate modem.

If you want to use d-link products you need to select from the DI range not the DSL range.

Did wonder about that, just checked and its deffo an ADSL router so won't work, take it back and ask for the cable version of the router.

can he not plug the cable modem into one of the ports on a DSL and use it as a AP?

Does not work, I've got one of those routers and was experimenting with using it as a wireless ap to get a signal to the pub (50 yds down the street) but it's a no go. My Linksys 11mbs cable router does not transmit that far but does work.

Assuming that your NTL Modem has a ethernet, try this: WGR-614, i use one of these as a Wireless Access point with a modem plugged into it by ethernet

No, that is not correct.

You may only use EITHER the USB connector, OR the Ethernet connector on the modem at any one time. To switch between the two, completely remove one of them and unplug the modem and replug in the modem.

However, if you want multiple computers to connect to your internet service you want a Cable/DSL router (Note the missing A in DSL), this will allow multiple ethernet connections to the router, which connects to the modem. This way you can have many many users on one router. And still only use Ethernet on your modem (as the router attaches to it).

Diagram:

Modem <--Ethernet Cable --> Wireless Router <--Ethernet Cable 1--> PC
                                  ^-Ethernet Cable 2---> PC 2?

             Wireless Connection 1-->Laptop (Or wireless enabled PC)
