sharing broadband with 5 other users

Hoy!

I have a wireless network with a wireless router, D-Link DIR 301 has been supplied, which is connected to cable modem supplied by the VM. The XL broadband network is used by 4 other users. It seems that when one user is downloading a file through http the wireless router or the cable modem somehow allocates all broadband to him, so other users seem to be unable to connect to Internet at all, or at really low speed.

Is there a way, to prevent this? Can I limit the speed somewhere on the wireless router?

Problem number 2:
The router reboots itself every 1 hour or so. I am yet unsure what is the reason for it, however it might be a P2P application. Any thoughts?

You may be able to allocate QoS against specific users to reduce the bandwidth they can suck from everyone.

Make sure the router has current firmware. But if one user if running P2P stuff, they may completely overwhelm the router unless they agree to cut down on the number of connections their software creates.

Hmm, the problem hasn't been solved yet. Basically the routher I am using now doesn't support the QoS. Does Linksys WRT54GL support QoS? If it does, where can I buy it (London area)?

for personal wireless router QOS/ traffic throttleing you usually need to look at the 3rd party firmware and buy a compatable wireless router that can use that, its techy though, not for your average Nooby user.

Afaik all of the Revisions of the WRT54GL support the 3rd party firmwares.

The L in the model number donates its the Linux variant.

Its the WRT54G or WRT54GS you have to be very carefull with only the earlier ones support the 3rd party firmwares although there is a dd-wrt micro for some of the later ones its not as good as the full blown DD-WRT.

Tomato is fairly user-friendly actually i've been using and been pretty impressed.
