Broadband XL, cable modem and Wireless router problem

Have had my XL package installed today, works fine if I connect the pc directly to the modem, but cannot get my Belkin F5D7231-4 to work with the modem, have tried various settings , some show the Belkin connection, some show No COnnection, but no matter what I can't get onto the net... (VM help no help at all.....)

Can anyone suggest what settings I need to use, or another avenue to obtain support please?

When you connect the router to the modem, you must power off the modem, then power on, allow to settle, then power up the router.

Re: Broadband XL, cable modem and Wireless router problem

Have tried that, but nothing happened. I am not even sure what WAN setting I should be using, Dynamic, Static, PPoE, etc..... both PPoE and Dynamic seemed to show a connection, but there was no traffic between the router and the modem when I tried to access the internet

Re: Broadband XL, cable modem and Wireless router problem

VM don't "support" networking stuff, so they won't be able to guide you on setup issues. You can use a router, they just won't tell you how.

In most cases the default settings on the router are the answer. If you've been messing with it, do a factory restore, then resort back to the power off modem stage. Make sure your computers connection to the modem has been removed.

If you can browse to the router from your computer you know that part of the equation is working.

Make sure you are using a straight through ethernet lead between the modem and router WAN (internet) port. If in doubt try a different one.

Re: Broadband XL, cable modem and Wireless router problem

Sorry if I am sounding like a bit of a thicko, I'm not really, just uber-frustrated.... have done all the obvious things, factory reset, (which casued it's own problems as I have another entity on the network that uses the same default IP address) powering down and up, etc..... this has just got me beat.... I know someone on here the other day said they had the same setup, and was trying to find out what settings they used....

Re: Broadband XL, cable modem and Wireless router problem

The Connection from the modem is dynamic in terms of the IP and DHCP settings. Unfortunately I have a Linksys router so the setup options do differ. Mine is set to "Automatic Connection - DHCP"

Re: Broadband XL, cable modem and Wireless router problem

KJben,

okay 2 ways to setup the belkin for NTL

1. (easy) switch off the ntl modem and leave it off for 5 mins, plug everything in the belkin and thats done)

2. (harder) log into the router via your main pc that always works on the NTL modem (default ip is http://192.168.2.1) then go to "internet wan" and select Connection Type.

You'll get a list of connection types there, select Dynamic IP press next and on the following page it'll ask for hostname, ignore this and below it says Change wan MAC ADDRESS, press that and then on the page that you get after that press CLONE.

after either of the 2 steps I've given you you should have connection.
