Netgear Router wont connect to Virgin

First off i work in a high school as an IT Technician, as part of a government initiative we provide and install free computers into pupils homes.

We are having major problems with getting a Netgear RP614 router to connect to the internet with a Virgin CM. The pupils house we are at has a pc already and we are using the router to split the connection between the old pc and the new free pc.

Having Virgin 20mb at home i decided to take the router home and test itthere...thinking that it might be a dodgy modem at the pupils house. The router wont work with my virgin connection either, it won't pick up an IP address automatically and even if i enter the IP settings manually it still will not connect to the internet.

Has anybody had any previous problems with this model of netgear router? or know what the problem is?

It's ****ing me off.

Thanks

Re: Netgear Router wont connect to Virgin

sounds to me like a dead router, do you get any ip on it from the pc's or nothing there either?

perhaps reset the router totally and try again?

Re: Netgear Router wont connect to Virgin

We have tried more than one router, and they all fail to pick up a connection with virgin.

The routers work fine on our school network and pick up a connection fine.

Re: Netgear Router wont connect to Virgin

You are rebooting the cable modem when you swap over the connections from PC to router? The modem doesn't know the connected device has changed until you repower it. Only one device can directly be connected to the modem (PC or router or console) so make sure all other ethernet and USB leads are disconnected from it.
