AFAIK she didn't disable her wireless but instead connected the PS3 to the router via cable to download the firmware but yeah ultimately PS3 firmware update solved the problems as it added support for WPA2

if she connected the cable then she did not do it wireless. right?

That would be true, however after the update she went wireless again
