sorry but another wireless problem

i'm new to the site so please be gentle
i have ntl bb connected via usb, and i want to change this to a ethernet connection.so that i can run a laptop via a wireless router.I have read various articles on how to change to ethernet, but either i'm doing something wrong or somethings not working.
i have a realtek family fast ethernet card which is visable in device manager, this says i'ts working fine.i have unplugged my modem from the power supply removed usb connection plugged cable into modem plugged other end of cable into ethernet card left 10mins powered modem backup all lights flicker etc then no internet connection i've tried 3 different cables in case these were damaged but still nothing.is there anything else i should be doing?as i am at a total loss as to what to do

cheers jay

Re: sorry but another wireless problem

1) Unplug power from the modem
2) Shut the PC down
3) Plug the Ethernet cable in, this should be a straight through cable and not a crossover
4) plug the modem in, wait for the SYN and RDY lights on the front of the modem to stop flashing
5) Turn the PC back on, let it finish booting,

If you don't manage to get online this way, then check the following on the PC

i) In Device manager are there any marks (red or yellow) listed? if so, what are they next to?
ii) In network connections, make sure the IP and DNS for the ethernet card are both on auto detect

If all else fails, open a command prompt (I will assume you are using XP with at least service pack 2 installed, or Vista)
type in the following commands

netsh int reset all
netsh winsock reset
