Wireless Network actual speeds rather slow

Morning All!

I'm in the process of re-installing Vista HB on my laptop and am recovering the backed up date from my desktop PC to the Laptop via my wired/wireless network.

The network topology is thus:-

Desktop - RJ45 link to - WRT54GS - Wireless Linked to brand new Amilo Pro V3515 with Atheros WLAN.

The laptop and the wireless router are in the same room currently, and are Line of Sight.

When I try to copy across a 1Gb folder Vista indicates a throughput of 0.98MB/s and that's it... is that to be expected?

I would have thought a 54MB/s wireless network ought to do better than that surely?!?!

i havnt seen any bit of networking kit reach the speeds it "ought" to do
if your wireless speeds are on the slow side check you have the latest drivers for your card and firmware for ur router.
also (and its a pain i know) try older drivers for ur wireless card - sometimes stuff happens

Id also try knocking down the security bit by bit if its super fast under a different security system we will have to look at other options.

I've taken your advice and update the firmware on the router... a couple of new features seem to be in the configuration pages but I'll look at those another day. In the meantime the network was still being rather slow.

I'm also having system lockup issues which I'm discussing in this thread here. One of the things I'm finding with this problem is that the latest WLAN drivers for my laptop appear to be causing the system lockups. Maybe this is an issue with the speed as well?

One other thing I need to get my head around is the different nomenclature I'm seeing with regard to network speeds. 54Mbps... 5.4MB/sec... I'm guessing Mbps is Mega bits per second and MB/sec is Mega Bytes per second, and so with 8bits to a byte when windows task manager tells me I am transferring data across the WLAN at 2MB/sec tha roughly translates to 16Mbps?

This is correct. Mb = Mega bits, MB = Mega Byte

I read in another post about NetStumbler which I've downloaded and installed.

This showed my next door neighbour was also on Channel 11 so I've moved away to Channel 4... let's see how we get on with that.

The other thing I'd like to ask about is the Signal to Noise Ratio. Which is better, a high or a low value? For example NetStumbler tells me I have an SNR or 58 and my neighbours is 11... I'm guessing lower is better... the next column seems to show that my peak signal is 39 and his is 82.

I feel like I'm going down a rabbit hole!
