Cable modem and wireless router problems!

Hello,

I'm a newbie here and hoping you will be able to help before I tear my hair out!!

I have had a wireless network set up for over a year with no problems. A few weeks ago, I am happily online browsing away when my connection drops out. To cut a long (and painful) story short, have rebooted everything, got a new router and wireless dongle (needlessly apparently) but the wireless network STILL isn't working and I can't figure out why.

If I connect direct to the cable modem, I have no problems at all.
My wireless network is detected and seems to be working fine.
If I connect direct to my router, doesn't work.
It seems that my modem & router just don't want to talk to eachother, what can I do?

yours, grovelingly.....

What router have you got? What exactly drops the connection, i.e. what do you have to reboot modem / router / computer or all? If you connect wired via the router, instea of wireless, does that make any difference?

Re: Cable modem and wireless router problems!

It was a netgear I had initially which worked fine until it freakishly just stopped. Thinking that the router may have reached the end of it's natural life, I got a new Belkin one.

Have tried with both and it's the same thing - even when I am wired into the router, it still won't connect. The only way I can connect is directly wired into the cable modem. (or hopping onto my neighbours wireless network!)

Re: Cable modem and wireless router problems!

Have you recently moved any DECT cordless phones nearby? Those things play havoc with wireless networking.

Have you tried changing the broadcast channel?

Re: Cable modem and wireless router problems!

Hope, haven't moved anything - the phone is still on the other side of the room.

Might try changing the broadcasting channel.

Would installing a service pack have any impact on the cable modem/router set-up?

Re: Cable modem and wireless router problems!

I would suggest using netstumbler to see if there are any other wireless networks operating on the same channel as you...
