with this spec should I get 20mb speeds with my router

Hi have got the spec for my Netgear Wireless router WGR614 v5 and was wondering if by the specs below should i be getting 20mb speed as it says Network Speeds: 1, 2, 5.5, 6, 9, 11, 12, 18, 24, 36, 48, & 54 Mbps (auto-rate capable) ?

Thank you for replying I have 2 desk top pcs the main one downstairs is connected to the router by an ethernet which is connected to my modem
directly above that pc in my daughters bedroom is her desktop pc which is on a usb wireless adapter.

Wired or wireless, you should be able to reach 20Mbps with that router. A point to note is that the 54Mbps over wireless is the theoretical maximum but with overheads, throughput etc. taken into account the true maximum bandwidth will be closer to 30Mbps.

Thanks Foxtrot prolem is Im getting speeds nowhere near 30 not even barely touching 11 cant figure out why? any ideas

So which computer are you getting <11Mbps? All of them?

Thats on the main Pc which is conencted to the router and modem by ethernet wire and its 11 depending on the time of day i would say on average of 7 to 10 the other pc is my daughters bedroom gets about 3-5 on avergae 1 if im very unlucky

Ok. It could be anything.

Modem:
[Assuming you have an ntl or VM branded modem]
On your web browser, go to http://192.168.100.1/CmOpConfig.asp (default username & password is 'root'
Check you're maximum downstream data rate is: 20480000
If it isn't, you haven't got 20Mbit

Router:
Reset it to the original factory settings.

If this doesn't work, then it may require a phonecall to Virgin Media. There's things they can do at their end to move you to a less busy channel on the UBR which may be the cause of your slow speeds.

not always the case, once you start adding encryption etc, a lot of routers out there can't handle 20mbit of wireless traffic, my linksys wrt54g will only manage ~16mbit
