signal strength- is this normal?

Hi. Just picked up a D-Link DIR-635 rangebooster N 650 wireless router. When I search for network I get a pretty decent signal all over the house, around 70%-100% depending how close I am. As soon as I connect the signal strength drops to around 60% even if I'm sat in the same room.

Ive updated to the latest firmware, but I have to be honest in that ive not attempted to alter any settings.

I'm learning as I am going along, so please bare with me.

Re: signal strength- is this normal?

*UPDATE*
Ive tried my laptop on another wireless connection - all above aboard don't worry

Same thing happened with this connection so maybe its the Acer Enet program im running. Maybe gives out 'false' readings?

Does anyone know of a freeware connection manager/monitor?

Re: signal strength- is this normal?

I'm now starting to think it might just be my network card thats telling porkies. I went for a wander down the road, even at 2 or 3 houses away I was still getting 60% signal... Identical readings to that of my laptop being sat right next to the router.

By the way, feel free to jump into my converstation with myself.
