Personally I would suggest the Linksys WRT54GS...

Its ready for both a wired and wireless network all at the same time. (so theres room to upgrade if the need arises)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wireless-G-B...&s=electronics

£40 is a bargain for that bad boy.

Re: can anybody recommend a broadband router for ntl thats not wireless

The ntl 200 modem isnt that old and should be adequate.

Using internet connection sharing with one main and one slave PC is unlikely to be slowing your overall speed too greatly, unless the connection sharing PC is very limited in capacity. However it may not be that economic to have to run your ICS PC just to let your slave PC work online. That's where the router comes in.

If buying a router today, the difference in cost is such that wireless can make sense for future proofing. However if wired is all you want then the Linksys BEFSR41 will do for most general purposes. If you want a firewall included in the router (can be a good idea) then choose the Linksys BEFSX41.

Agree, this router is definitely recommended by lots of members on this forum. If you don't need the wireless capability yet, you can just switch it off.

Re: can anybody recommend a broadband router for ntl thats not wireless

Hmmmm... I'm having issues with a WRT54GS router and Windows Vista on a new laptop and searching arouns the forums flags up that WRT54GS from version 5 onwards are not so good. Mine is 6 months old and I'm thinking of dumping it, two weeks trying to solve wireless connectivity problems.

Re: can anybody recommend a broadband router for ntl thats not wireless

Personally you could not pay me to have wireless anything, yea i have wires around my skirting board but as long as you do it right it's all good.

Wireless routers are a pain to setup and from my experience dont have the performance of wired routers.

And dont get me started on wireless mice rofl.

Back on topic i had a Sitecom wired router with firewall and would recommend it easy to use and setup

The linksts BEFSR81 is good i used to use one of these, it was probably the most reliable router I have ever owned. I never touched it once it was set up and running.

I've used that one, but I don't think its going to be future proof for much longer.

Yep any router that supports more than one computer at a time (i.e. it hasn't been limited like the Telewest supplied Netgear thing) can have a switch / hub connected from one of it's ports so you can network a larger number of PCs/ printers etc. Bear in mind that the Virgin Media terms or acceptable use policy limit the number of computers you should be using.
