Advice Needed

Hi,

My dad has a modem in his Telewest set top box and he runs his PCs Internet access with an Ethernet cable from the set top box modem to the PC. As the Set Top box only has one Ethernet connection I was wondering if If i would need to purchase a Motorola Surfboard modem for my room to use with an Netgear wireless router that I have to have Internet access on both the PC and my Laptop in my bedroom at the same time??

Any advice would be great Cheers

You can't legally buy a cable modem to use with Virgin Media (ntl/Telewest) - all CMs are still the property of Virgin, & will only work if supplied, registered, & activated by Virgin.

Easiest thing to do is simply connect a router to your dad's Set Top Box, & then connect his PC & your PC to the router.

Which model Netgear wireless router do you have?

Yep, connect a router to your Dad's set top box and then connect all your computers into the router.

Router reccomendations can be found here:

Re: Advice Needed

reading around on the internet for a couple of minutes tells me that the netear mr814v2tw has customized firmware form NTL/Telewest. The firmware is has been intentionally hacked by NTL/TW to only support one PC, in a sense reducing it's functionality to that of a wireless access point.

Sorry to say it, but i'd ditch it and buy a new router.
