Can ADSL modem router be used with NTL modem???

Hello all,

Please excuse my ignorance if this is a silly question... I have just had NTL cable installed for broadband only. I was previously with Orange through BT and used a Netgear DG834GT for wireless connection. I have just been to PC world for a suitable cable and was told I needed to buy a new modem! Is there anything else I can do? The guy in PC world mumbled something about disabling the netgear modem but recommended against it...

I'm on and intel Mac btw.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm afraid that modem won't work with Virgin Media (ntl). You will have to buy a cable wireless router. The Linksys WRT54G series is highly recommended by members on this forum. I have one too and think it's great.

Thanks for the quick reply and tip. I shall look into the Linksys. Not sure if they're recommended for Mac's but hopefully so...

According to the below link it's not.

They connect via Ethernet. The Mac will have no idea what's on the other end of the network cable. It will just work.

And yes, I have owned a mac for a couple of years, and been using a mac for several years.

I also (until recently) had a WRT54G. It works fine with the mac.

They are talking a load of ....

They also state it's a DSL router for cable. DSL and Cable are two different technologies. A DSL router will not work with a cable connection.

What do PC world know at all?
We called in there to our local branch just a couple of weeks ago with a similar request (we have 2 PCs a mac and a laptop) and going wireless would've been good but for the oft confusing and conflicting advice offered by the no-brains in PCWorld.. (not that all the staff are the same..! some knew less than the previous member of staff.. LOL!)
We even went into Manchester to the Apple store there... and no way.. too expensive!!
Anyhow.. we've got 2 PCs set up to a Linksys wired jobby that seems to do pretty well for now... but the mac has 'Airport Extreme' on it which means it does have the capacity to pick up wireless internet connections (cos we tried it) and our intention (when we asked) was 'Ok, so we hard-wire a PC to the router and then the other PC will be rigged up to be wireless and the mac..' - and thats when we lost all hope with PC world... we never got as far as the laptop :-p
But I'll take the advice here and go with another Linksys (they are good, aren't they? and I'll let you know now that I took advice about routers here anyway first time round and I'm not complaining!)

We're turning one room into a studio and need a computer in there and it needs connectivity and I want to be a lazy oik with the lappy....give my ancient PC a bit of a rest lol...

It'll be a few weeks yet before we make the plunge and get the router we want as it does seem that we need to gear up our PCs first with the stuff to be able go wireless (and it could finally mean I can change the living room around a bit and hide some of those bl**dy cables!!!)

Any good suggestions on that? I have one spare pci slot on my pc and I'm not entirely sure about the new comp.. the laptop has the thing for wireless but no card and the mac just *works* (it's surprising how many unprotected connections we picked up with it too... bloomin' prostituting mac!)
Any light shed would be appreciated.. screwdriver and the intelligence to connect to stuff are all in place ready..

afaik a adsl router will work with a cable modem but only as a switch so you could set up internet connection sharing using the lan ports. Never tried setting one up to use as wireless but as a ad hoc network I cant see it not working it just means you have to have a server pc on to access the net on clients (as said this in untested by me so god knows if it works or not someone try lol )

No, simply that I am now connected via Be, so am using their Be Box ADSL router.

The WRT is still an excellent router, and works well with all the devices I have tried (xbox, xbox360, Mac, Belkin Printer server and PCs).
