Smile static ip needed for nas drive

hi this is my first post and hope its in the right place
i have purchased a network atatched storage drive put the hdd in and connected it to my pc. now i can see the drives in all my computers that are on the network. the problem im having is that i cant access it remotely over the internet. the manual says i need a static ip address but im with blueyonder - would this be static - if not how do i get one - thanks

Don't think you can get a fixed IP without paying for a business account but are you sure you are using the right IP address? You will probably need the external IP address from the BY modem. Also have you got a router in the network or firewalls running?

i used my ip address.com to get my ip - and im with telewest not bt - and yes its all running through a belkin n1 router and thats got a built in firewall

If you use a combination of port forwarding on the router along with something like DynDNS you should be good to go.

The only other thing you should do along with that is reserve an IP address on the router for the MAC address of the NAS device otherwise the port forwarding might be wrong if anything gets rebooted.

Yes but your IP *MIGHT* change now and again, so it's worth setting up something like dyndns.org
