HomePlug Network Setup

Might or might not be of use to anyone, but I was bored in work today so made up a diagram showing my network setup.

Its all working perfect, with the exception of the XBOX 360 which I won't get my grubby mits on till February

Gotta say, these homeplug devices are superb. True plug and play. Service I got from SolWise too was exceptional. 10/10 for service and product - highly recommended. Much more stable then WiFi.

Re: HomePlug Network Setup

Good diagram.
Hopefully it will help people with similar setups set up their gear.

Re: HomePlug Network Setup

Im not 100% sure but I dont think a third HomePlug Unit would work as it would be trying to get a second IP from the NTL Modem which it won't get.

Re: HomePlug Network Setup

Surely that's the whole point of him having the router, that dishes out the IPs.

Excellent diagram, thank you. Been thinking of getting these for ages and having been waiting for reviews from others before I dive in.

Things will be interesting in the near future when cable/sat stbs etc come with built in homeplug technology. Then we'll really have truly "wired" homes.

hmmmmmmm this will not work with the 3rd homeplug as zeph says there is only one ip from the modem and the router will take that not leaving one for the home plug what he needs to do it set the router up by the modem and then a home plug by the pc
ill post a rougher diagram

Re: HomePlug Network Setup

No problem, glad to be of some help.

Third HomePlug on the 360 should be fine, because theorhetically it'll be talking to the router, not the modem. Just the same as if I'd used an RJ45 cable to connect it to the router.

That's the assumption anyway.

Re: HomePlug Network Setup

please see my diagram it explains where the router needs to be

the 3rd homeplug will not give an ip to the xbox if the router is on simpel as that as the modem only gives 1 ip but putting the router where i say allows a lan address to work
The 3rd homeplug will not connect to the router it will try to connect to the modem my way is right

Yeah that's the 'typical' setup. However, at present I needed to cut down on cost. So only have two HomePlug adapters - as per the diagram (ignore the third one for the 360 for a minute).

My NTL cable connection comes in downstairs, but the PC's are upstairs, hence I put one to connect to the modem, then shifted the router upstairs and connected both PC's with LAN cable.

That works fine.

The addition of the 360 is untested. No doubt, you're probably correct.

However I was hoping to get away with the purchase of only one more HomePlug device (they are £40 a pop). Wheras if I wanted to follow your example, I'd need:

1 for modem/router
1 for PC
1 for 2nd PC
1 for XBOX360

Totaling 4 HomePlugs.

Hmm...

EDIT: Wait no I wouldn't. I could just hook the 360 upto the router as it would be back downstairs I guess? Ah that makes sense. Indeed that is what I will do once I get the 360 then. Cheers

Re: HomePlug Network Setup

Yeah cheers

At the moment, it works fine the way its setup. Its only when I come to add the 360 I'll need to reshuffle it as per your diagram.

EDIT: Though nothing stopping me leaving it the way it is and connecting the 360 by wireless no?

HomePlugs are well worth the money though. Far superior to fannying about with WiFi and much more stable.

Re: HomePlug Network Setup

Hehe, worthy of your recommendation and seconded by me!

Especially bored in work today, so heres my setup come February and the purchase of an Xbox 360:

Again, may be useful for others thinking about how to setup a network using the HomePlugs
