Couple of Noob questions

Well, the engineer has not long departed leaving me with a 1 meg pipe. He was a nice chap but not very clued up on installation of the 'Broadband Installer' disc I got with the modem. Reading through the blurb, it seems that this disc is only for use if you are connecting directly to the cable modem and does not mention wireless networks - which I want to set-up.

My main questions are:
1. Do I need to install this 'Broadband Installer' disc if I'm going wireless with a Linksys router and 2 laptop set up?

2. I will be using a new lappy for my connection but wondered how I keep my NTL e-mail addy - from my old dial up account. I'm assuming I have to go into Outlook Express and tinker but what with?
Many thanks in advance and sorry if I posted in the wrong forum.

Re: Couple of Noob questions

1. No just plug the linksys into the CM, turn both off, turn the CM back on and wait for the sync and rdy lights to go stable, turn the linksys on wait and away you go. Best to configure the wireless using a wired connection though.

2. You may need to talk to NTL about keeping a dial up email address on you bb account.

Re: Couple of Noob questions

hi jedi....

i'd recomend going through the registration first.. before setting up the wireless connection... and u shouldnt need to use the BB installer cd... should be a case of connect up the ethernet straight from cable modem to pc, and direct your browser to https://80.5.178.26/
when your going through reg... u get the option to enter your existing NTL dial up account details... once registration confirms these... the details are transferred to your new BB account.
the only thing u then need to change in outlook express is the way in which it connects to the mail server... from dial up to lan

Re: Couple of Noob questions

As has been mentioned you dont need the installer disc.
First connect up your first PC directly to the cable modem and once the Internet is working there, then you can go and sort out your network.
To set up the network once you have net access turn everything off including the modem. It should be as plain as plugging the cable modem into the router, and then switching it on first, then the router.
Then use the routers setup disc or instructions to set up each machine.
Good luck.

Re: Couple of Noob questions

I'm getting a bit stressed up atm. I've connected everything up, and done a basic set-up on the router (a WRT54G) but just keep getting the 'This page cannot be displayed' notice when trying to get to google, ebay e.t.c. Any idea what's gone wrong?

Once again, thanks in advance.

Have you registered the CM ?

without doing that - nothing will work..

try pluggin the PC into the CM without the router, and get registered, the switch of th CM, plug the router into it, switch on the CM, wait fort he lights to stabilise, then switch on the router, then switch on your PC.

Also - make sure the PC has been set to get its IP address automatically (DHCP).

Re: Couple of Noob questions

What zovat says... sounds like your cable modem hasn't been registered yet. Until you do that, no other sites are going to work.
