Setting up a wireless network - telewest Usb cable modem

Would really appreciate some advice as to what gear to buy to get a wireless network set up at home
I currently have a 1meg connection through a surfboard sb4200 connected via Usb. This is shared between two pcs with 10/100 pci network cards and RJ45 cable.
I'm about to acquire a notebook with integrated 802.11g and want to set up a wireless network with one desktop and this. Will I need to convert the connection between the modem and desktop from usb to ethernet? if so how easy is this, and any advice on which router would be best for me? As the modem is currently by the desktop, can i simply connect the router to the desktop's network card and then use only the laptop wirelessly?
Sorry for all the questions, but I really want to avoid buying the wrong gear and avoid setup hitches if I can. I'm a reasonably experienced pc builder but novice when it comes to networks!

You can still connect using USB, but by the time you've changed around your connections you might as well use the ethernet. The existing connection setups will efectively be redundant.

Recommendations for routers are in this article:

Regarding most wireless capable routers, they also have wired ports. Thus you cna have wired and wireless on the same network. Only thing I have found is, if you are sharing files / printers on the network, you must choose the right network mode on the router - linksys refer to infrastructure or ad-hoc, I think it's infrastructure you need - perhaps a case of RTFM before plugging it all in.
